IN MODERATION: The Very Reverend William B Johnston, Moderator of the Church of Scotland, at Lanark cattle market in November 1980. Also with him are local ministers, the Rev Jim Wilson of St Kentigern’s Church, and the Rev John McIndoe of St Nicholas in Lanark – who went on to become Moderator himself – and the Rev Joe Hardie from Douglas. The Moderator’s dress with its fancy lace did not survive...unlike Lanark cattle market which is still going strong.

50 YEARS AGO

n Some time between Saturday night and Sunday morning, an intruder had broken into the offices of the Loch Garage owned by Messrs JT Reid (Lanark) Ltd and stolen a quantity of money.

n Over 140 surgeons packed into Law Hospital for a three-day conference on arterial surgery. Addresses were made by 17 of Britain’s top surgeons including Professors PR Allison, Oxford, George Smith MBE, Aberdeen and WS Peart, St Mary’s, London.

n Mrs Janet Smith of 8 Greenbank Terrace, Carluke, could not believe her ears when told she had won first prize of a free fortnight’s holiday in Palma, Majorca, in Carluke Co-operative Society’s draw.

n Lanark Town Council were raising slaughterhouse charges by five per cent. The new rates were: cattle 25s per beast; calves 5s 3d; pigs 10s 6d; and sheep 7s.

n Carluke Rovers’ star left half Gordon Tosh was chosen in his club position to captain a Scottish Junior select team to play a challenge game against a Glasgow Junior select on February 9.

n The first child in Lanark to get Insurance Act Maternity Benefit would be the baby girl born to Mr and Mrs James Donnelly of 4 Wide Close.

n A snowstorm in Carluke was the worst experienced in the town that winter. Roads were rendered impassable after being covered by several inches of snow.

n Soprano Jenny Taggart, contralto Gertrude Lonsdale, baritone Charles Tree, tenor Alfred Heather and Jan Hurst, solo pianist and accompanist, performed a high class concert in Lanark’s YMCA Hall.

n Admission was by ticket only for an address in Carluke Town Hall that afternoon by Lord Advocate Alex Ure. A number of chairs in front of the gallery had been reserved for ladies.

n Carluke Hearts FC players Robert Paterson and James Hunter received gold badges from their fellow members and friends in the Market Restaurant to mark the fact they were both emigrating to America.

n Law Volunteers FC’s home game against Earnock was postponed as a layer of snow covered the pitch.
