Olympic glory for Katie and Katherine

Congratulations have been pouring in for East Dunbartonshire Olympic stars Katie Archibald and Katherine Grainger.

Katie and team-mates Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell-Shand and Elinor Barker p[roduced a series of stunning rides to take gold in the cycling team pursuit.

The 22-year-old from Milngavie and the rest of the team, smashed the world record in reach of their three rides - qualifying hewat, semi-final and final - as they claimed gold ahead of the United States.

Katie’s success came hard on the heels of former Bearsden Academy pupil Katherine Grainger’s momentous achievement in becoming Britain’s most decorated female Olympian of all-time following her rowing silver in the double sculls with Victoria Thornley on Thursday.

The duo’s success delighted East Dunbartonshire Provost Una Walker who said: “Congratulations to Katherine on winning silver in the Olympic double sculls final - cementing her place as Britain’s most-decorated female Olympian.

“Her continued success at the peak of her sport is a genuine inspiration.

“And well done to Katie as well, for her stunning performances in the Velodrome. I’m sure I speak on behalf of everyone in East Dunbartonshire when I say

well done to Katherine and Katie - they truly have done us proud.”
