The 21-year-old from Newton Mearns defeated a top quality field of 600 athletes in the Balaeric u23 Triathlon championships in Colonia Sant Jordi, Mallorca.

The race consisted of a 1,500 swim in the sea, a 40k cycle and a 10k run.

The athlete, who is currently on a sports scholarship at Stirling University, broke away from the majority of the pack 800m into the swim.

Greg was the only Brit left, as he, a German and five Spaniards were competing for top spot throughout the majority of the swim and the cycle.

However, after the cycle, Greg upped the ante and went clear, with a blistering 10k run of 30 minutes and 18 seconds.

Overall, he defeated his nearest challenger by almost two minutes, finishing in 1:45:23.

“It was my first race of the season and in such a strong European field I wasn’t sure if I was race fit or not,” Greg told ExtraSport.

“I had a good swim and my confidence grew as the race progressed. I hope this is a good omen for the rest of the season.”

The southsider, who is sponsored by local business the Lubricant Company, is back in action this weekend in the Belvoir Castle Triathlon in Leicestershire.
