The European 69kg champion, of Newhouse Park Farm, defeated four opponents who were up to two years older at the Nikolay Pavlyukov tribute event, before a controversial split decision defeat to a Kazakhstan fighter in the final.

The Lanark-born boxer’s grandfather William Barton, who watched Willie fighting in Russia via live internet coverage, said: “What Willie did was unbelievable. Getting a silver medal surpassed all his expectations.”
