A total of 55 people – including Clydesdale MSP Aileen Campbell – turned out as the traditional quaich was poured into the River Clyde by United Clyde Angling Protective Association man Munro Reid.

The group was then led to the riverside by piper David Stark, after enjoying food and refreshments at the nearby Popinjay Hotel.

“I thought the turnout was excellent when you consider the fact that the rain was teeming down,” said the Angling Association’s Fraser Simpson (55).

The salmon fishing season on the Clyde will run until October, with tough new legislation meaning that each angler will only be allowed to kill a maximum of five fish in the 2014 season.

“A tagging system has been introduced because we are very aware of having proper conservation on the river,” added Fraser.
