Allan Glens defeat Lenzie to take derby double

Glen’s went into the match on the back of a fine performance against division winners Glasgow Academicals and expected an easy win over a Lenzie side who received a drubbing at the hands of Helensburgh and had several key players missing.

But although they got there in the end to complete a league double over their rivals, it was a rather unconvincing win only secured late in the second half.

Glen’s took the game to Lenzie from the kick off and retained the ball well to test Lenzie’s defence several times.

However, Lenzie worked hard to keep them out and it took Glen’s 15 minutes to open the scoring when some excellent forward play resulted in a short range try by Liam Frame converted by Andrew Watt.

Lenzie worked their way into the game and were unlucky not to score when Buick was put through, but their pressure was rewarded when Danny Scouller converted a penalty to bring the score to 7-3 at the break.

Early in an exciting second period captain Scouller broke through the home defence to score an unconverted try.

Glen’s replied with a Watt penalty but the visitors immediately responded with a try by Michael Slade and another Scouller penalty to put them 18-10 in front.

Sean Kirk came close before, with 10 minutes remaining, Glen’s pounced on a Lenzie mistake and Jono Murrell went over for a try converted by Watt.

Kirk then put them in front and his try was again converted by Watt to seal victory in an entertaining game played in good spirits, for which both teams deserve great credit.

Glen’s have now finished their season and are safely placed in mid-table.

However Lenzie, who have one game to play against second bottom Garnock, are third bottom and with two teams to go down could yet be dragged into a relegation fight.
