Skating in Philly will be like a sprinter competing in the Olympics, says MSP

WHEN the cream of the crop of Scottish skating compete in America this summer it will be akin to a sprinter taking part in the Olympics.

That’s the view of another high-ranking Scottish Parliamentarian, who is also backing Glasgow Roller Derby’s bid to send their elite team to America to compete against the world’s best in June.

The GRD have been handed a priceless invitation to line up in the annual East Coast Derby Extravaganza in Pennsylvania.

It’s one of the biggest and best derby events in the world and a host of political heavyweights - across all parties - have backed the GRD’s A-team - the Irn Bruisers - to fly the flag.

Glasgow MSP Bob Doris has even lodged a Parliamentary motion praising the GRD’s efforts to get to the States.

Now Paul Martin, MSP for Glasgow Provan, has said: “Good luck to the Irn Bruisers - the chance to play at the home of roller derby in America will be like a sprinter competing at the Olympics.

“Roller derby is becoming a bigger sport every year so to have Glasgow and Scotland represented by a top team from Europe is testament to the skill and stamina of the women competing.

“You have to be brave to play, but I know the Glasgow Roller Derby all stars will do us proud.”

The leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Ruth Davidson MSP, added: “It’s fantastic to hear that Glasgow’s own Irn Bruisers have been invited to take on some of the worlds best roller derby teams in the USA.

“Roller derby is a fast, tough sport and the Irn Bruisers are already dominating competitions across Europe.

“It would be a real boost to roller derby at home if they were able to fly the flag for Scotland in America.

“Good luck ladies!”
