Spiders knocked out of League Cup

Queen’s Park couldn’t repeat their cup heroics of last week and crashed out of the cup at home to Forfar Athletic.

Two first-half strikes from Derek Young and Danny Denholm knocked out Gus macPherson’s side and a side which contained all but three of last season’s play-off finalists.

The Spiders boss should be commended for retaining so many of last year’s squad for continuity, but it came a bit unstuck against the League One club.

It was the first time the sides have met in meaningful action for five years. That was also a League Cup tie, when QP lost 32 after extra time, and fans had better entertainment than the week prior.

Forfar proved the more adept at keeping the ball on the ground with some passing football and took the lead in 16 minutes with a simple goal.

Woods had just failed to pull off a onetwo with Quinn in the Forfar box a minute earlier, but there looked little danger when Forfar broke at the other end. Templeman tried to drive into the box but the ball broke to the edge ofthe area and Derek Young, with the game’s first shot on target, drove it low from the edge of the box past the diving Muir at his lefthand post.

Queen’s were tidy as usual, but again without penetration.

The Loons got a second goal, on 29 minutes from the penalty spot.

Wharton clearly and clumsily barged into the back of Young, who went down, and the defender didn’t protest when the referee pointed to the spot.

Willie Muir saved three penalties in last week’s Edinburgh shootout so it was no surprise when he blocked Fotheringham’s effort, but Denholm was

first to the loose ball to smash it into the net past the unlucky keeper.

Queen’s lost skipper Tony Quinn in 57 minutes but did well to keep it scoreless in the second half.
