Spiders settle for second place with late equaliser

Arbroath 1 Queen’s Park 1

Just 24 minutes in, Spiders conceded a goal to Arbroath and then took the game to the wire before scoring the equaliser — well into added time — that secured the second prize of runners-up spot, with Clyde FC losing to Rovers at the same time.

A switch from Mitchell to McPherson, bringing two strikers into the game just before the hour failed to reap rewards and another switch from Berry to Moore ten minutes later still left the Spiders goalless.

A wasted opportunity of a corner kick for Queen’s added to the fans’ dismay.

Despite the title hopes being all but over as news filtered through that Rovers were now ahead with a win against Clyde, Queen’s continued to battle for the consolation of an equaliser.

With a matter of seconds to go in added time, a high ball into the Arbroath box was only partially cleared by Nicoll and, as it fell to Sean Burns, he crashed a low volley into the corner of the net.
