Teenage golfer Blair Callan hits hole-in-one

Getting a hole-in-one can often be the unobtainable Holy Grail for the millions of players who play this great sport.

But it’s been successfully landed by 14-year-old Biggar lad Blair Callan, who aced the 157-yard par three seventh hole at his local course during a medal on Saturday, May 2.

Blair, of Knockbank, holed the seven iron shot just three days before his 14th birthday, during a medal at which his playing partner was his uncle Craig Whitefield (43).

“The seventh is a flat hole so I could see the ball go in the hole from where I was standing on the tee,” Blair said.

“I was very happy to get my first hole-in-one, two years after I first started playing from the medal tees.

“My uncle Craig – who has never had a hole-in-one – was really excited when the ball trickled in.”

Blair – whose best struck drives travel a full 240 yards up the fairway – ended up with a gross score of 88 in the medal. This translated into a net 73 when his handicap of 15 was subtracted.

Due to his young age, Blair wasn’t required to buy a round of drinks for other members in the clubhouse after the round.

When asked to identify his favourite professional golfer, the youngster had no hesitation in naming the charismatic Spaniard Sergio Garcia.

Blair explained: “I particularly admire Sergio for his iron play.

“He also has a great sense of humour and is very laid back.”

Blair, who won a commemorative silver Boss watch for his ace, is certainly off good golfing stock. His dad Stevie has won a total of 21 club championship titles – 12 at Carnwath GC and nine at Biggar GC.
