Thorniewood beat 'Gow 4-3 in thriller

Thorniewood United boosted their promotion prospects with a thrilling 4-3 home victory over Lesmahagow Juniors at Robertson Park last Saturday.

“The game was a great advert for junior football,” said Thorniewood boss Andy Frame.

“We played really well and felt we deserved the win.

“The fans and myself were delighted when we scored our late winner.

“The result was a massive one in our first game since Christmas as it takes us above Lesmahagow in Central Division 1.

“We now need to try and get consistency and string some good results together.”

Saturday’s pulsating action began with ’Wood striker Chris Lennon having an early shot saved by ’Gow keeper Derek Barnes before seconds later striking the base of the post in a whirlwind opening 30 seconds.

Jack Currie put Lesmahagow ahead after 20 minutes when he cut in from the left and steered the ball into the bottom corner.

Thorniewood levelled from the spot on 39 minutes when Lennon scored after Higgins had been tripped.

Lesmahagow took a 58th minute lead when a cross from the right was blasted home by Currie.

But Thorniewood stuck to their task and following a sustained period of pressure were rewarded with an 80th minute equaliser when Mark McShane found the bottom corner.

A minute later Barnes produced a full length save to deny a well struck Lennon effort before superbly tipping over from the same player as ’Wood went full out for the win.

This seemingly arrived in the 85th minute with debutant Clyde loanee Billy Robb heading home at the back post from a Lafferty corner.

Joy was short lived however when Lesmahagow broke from the restart and levelled with substitute James Coffey lashing home after some very poor home defending.

Thorniewood scored the winner in the 89th minute when when a long McNulty ball was superbly controlled by Anderson who dispatched into the bottom corner.
