The 10-mile race – run in memory of the legendary runner from Law – started and finished in John Cumming Stadium and also included action on the twisty roads around Carluke.

Race organiser Robert Benyon said: “Robert was neck and neck with the Eritrean runner Twelde Mengisteab as they ran back into the stadium.

“I think everyone in the stadium was expecting the Eritrean to power away with it but Robert dug in and produced a great final sprint to win by 20m.

“It was one of the most exciting finishes to the race we’ve ever had.”

Work on the usual venue of Strathclyde Park ahead of the triathlon being staged at this summer’s Commonwealth Games meant that the Tom Scott Road Race had to be moved for the first time in a decade.

Although just 200 people took part in the race (down 100 from last year), Robert said that many athletes felt running through Carluke was better as it made it a genuine ‘road race’.
