Tony takes fresh approach

The Newlandsfield side face a potential six pointer against Largs on Saturday.

The seasiders are in bottom place in the superleague Premier division, but are just one point behind Pollok.

Gaffer Tony told ExtraSport: “There are a lot of players here at the wrong end of their career who are on serious money.

“The entire transfer budget was spent in the summer and I am not in a position to spend now.

“There has been no future planning at the club, it has all been short term thinking. That’s what I want to change.”

Proven goalscorer Iain Diack was recently let go, while a number of young prospects have been signed in his 
place.

Tony continued: “Come summer we can bring in two or three players for what was being spent on one salary — that’s the reality of the situation.

“That’s why we had to let a player like Iain Diack go.

“Too much money has been spent in the last two or three years and you would be deluded to think otherwise.

“We need defenders, we are trying really hard to bring some in but we are facing a great deal of difficulty in doing so.

“Clubs don’t want to sell their best players.

“Also, with the Bosman rule in place, a lot of players are happy just seeing out their contract.

“Realistically, we can only offer players a relegation battle, we are not challenging for a league or a cup

“In the summer it will be a different story and I will be able to really start to build the young, hungry team that I want.”

When Tony took over, the club had won just one game in 12 and the poor run of form has continued.

Now, Pollok have nine games left to play to secure their place in the Superleague Premier Division for next season.

On Saturday, Pollok gave up a two goal lead against Kirkintilloch RR, losing 4-2 at full time .

Tony added: “The players are low in confidence and when you are low in confidence, you don’t play with freedom.

“We have seen improvements in training and hopefully they can continue.

“People might say Saturday is six pointer, but there is still plenty of football left to play and time to turn things around here.”

Pollok take on Largs Thistle at 2pm.

HIGHLY-RATED striker Jamie Watson has joined Pollok on loan from SPFL championship side Raith Rovers.

The 18-year-old, who is a graduate of the Fife club’s youth academy system, has signed till the end of the season.

He will join former Airdrienonians Jamie Barclay and Andy Duncan, as well as Dumbarton’s Josh Horne, as part of a new look line-up.
