Torrential rain swamps repairs at Gow’s Craighead Park

TORRENTIAL rain on Friday night and into Saturday morning flooded Lesmahagow Juniors’ Craighead Park ground and sent it “back to square one”.

The drenching – which sent silt and mud cascading down the pitch and into the dressing room – came after workers from park owners South Lanarkshire had spent around two weeks doing remedial work to combat previous flooding problems.

’Gow manager Robert Irving said: “I don’t understand why these workers have allowed this water to run down the pitch and into the dressing rooms after cleaning them out. This flood water got inside and damaged strips, training gear and medical equipment.

“Surely sandbags should have been put down to divert the water away from the dressing room building.

“We live in a climate with unpredictable weather. Surely the council could have put precautions down to protect the dressing room.”

A South Lanarkshire Council spokeswoman responded by saying that council staff had met with Lesmahagow officials on January 13, when it was confirmed that Craighead Park would be out of commission for the remainder of this season.

She added: “An alternative facility for the club to play out their remaining home fixtures has been put in place.”
