Warriors stand fast to win

The WofS Warriors took full advantage of their return match with the Nottingham Jaguars on home turf last weekend.

The Jaguars came to town and were expecting a walkover victory but WofS Warriors stood their ground and forced Jags to bring out all their amo to secure a narrow win for Warriors in the final seconds of the match.

For the return match from last weekend, the Warriors having home advantage gave a debut to 17yrs old Connor Davidson who played along side Gorrie, Murphy, McWilliam and Connor’s dad Gary Davidson.

Starting off the second quarter the Warriors began to dominate putting on a four-man press that opened up a six-point lead of 24-18.

At half time the score was Warriors 24 Vs 18 Jaguars. Scorers were Murphy 6pts; C.Davidson 4Pts; Gorrie 2pts; and Logan 2pts.

The coach for the day Bobby Park went with a different starting five of C.Davidson, Logan, Murphy, McWilliam and Gorrie. The Jaguars sensed they could take the Warriors this qtr and put on a full court press.

Their tactics worked as the Jaguars went two points ahead with two of the Warriors most experienced players on the bench. Coach Park threw on Moore and G.Davidson who hit 2pts straight away to draw the game level then Moore was put to the line for two free throws he converted both to give the Warriors a 2pt lead Davidson then hit another 2pt shot to give the Warriors a 4pt lead but once again the Jaguars clawed their way back into the match hitting two quick lay ups making the score at the end of the third quarter, closing with a level 30-10.

The battle was on going into the final qtr. Coach Park sent out a starting five of G Davidson, Moore, McWilliam, Logan and Murphy.

The game drew level at 30-30 and right from the off the Warriors put in a full court press. The game was going from end to end with the Jaguars hitting one from two free throws taking them 1pt ahead for the first time in the game.

Then Moore hits 2pts for the Warriors putting them 1pt ahead.

32-31 and the Jaguars sprinted down the court to score 2pts for 33-32 to Jaguars.

With the game racing on, Davidson hit a long distance 2pts shot straight, still pressing.

Moore got the break and hit 2pts from outside the quay taking the score to 36-33 to Warriors. With 90 seconds to go, the Warriors ran down the clock causing Jaguars to open up giving Murphy the chance of the last 2pts of the game.
