The third for City came minutes later when a Leanne Ross saw her strike come back off the crossbar only for City’s central defense player Eilish McSorley to thunder a low shot past Harrison within the penalty box.

But the first half action hadn’t quites finished as Spartans managed to claw a goal back before the break.

A poor clearance from the City team at the back allowed Spartans’ Sarah Evans with a golden opportunity she wasn’t going to pass up and she scored, beating Lee Alexander between the sticks for City, giving her side an opportunity to get back into the game.

However, in almost a tit-for-tat situation, City captain Leanne Ross with a free kick from outside the area to take City to a 4-1 lead before Ms Ewens also scored with a dead ball to make it 4-2 in favour of the visitors.

City made fired ahead with their ambitions to score at least once more in the klast five minutes — and a Sarah Lappin strike fired back off the crossbar making it oh so close.

City’s head coach, Eddie Wolecki Black, said of the game: “It was pleasing to get three points and it showed that the break had an effect on us.

“We were a little bit less assured than we normally are and there was never really a flow to our game today.

However, we managed to get goals at good times and that kind of knocked the stuffing out of Spartans and coupled with the Rangers and Hibernian result, we have strengthened our position at the top of the league.”

Next up for the City women is an away tussle with fourth placed Hibernian.

That game takes place on Sunday, August 24.
