The Milngavie club, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, just missed out on promotion last year when they finished third in the table behind Lasswade and Preston Lodge.

West’s first XV completed their build-up to the new campaign in Northern Ireland last weekend when they beat Carrickfergus.

The match was a return fixture following following Carrick’s visit to Burnbrae in April with the games forming part of both clubs’ 150th birthday celebrations.

The previous week West played in a three-team round robin tournament at Falkirk where they played two 40-minute matches, going down 17-7 to Falkirk and 15-10 to Ayr.

Coincidentally West also finished last season’s programme against Kilbride, winning 31-16 at home in their final league match to complete the double, having also won 28-9 at East Kilbride in November. The second XV also begin their campaign away to Hamilton.

The club’s 150th anniversary will be celebrated with a special celebrity dinner and ceilidh at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, on Saturday, September 19.
