Woodpecker AFC team is formed

THE players and management of newly formed amateur football side Woodpecker AFC hope to fly to glory in this season's Carluke and District Sunday League Division 1.

Featuring players who are regulars at Lanark's Woodpecker Restaurant and Bar in Wide Close, the team impressed hugely in a 12-1 friendly thumping of Coalburn Amateurs on Sunday.

That game, at Woodpecker AFC's pre-season home of Kilbank Park in Kirkfieldbank, followed hard on the heels of the Lanark side's first fixture, a 2-1 loss to Carnwath Amateurs at the same venue last midweek.

Woodpecker AFC manager David Cox said: "I'm really excited to be managing this team and we're raring to go for the start of the competitive season in late August or early September.

"The result against Coalburn was a huge confidence booster for us, as Coalburn will be in our league this season.

"The boys all played good passing football and worked hard for each other.

"We're hoping to win the league this season. Failing that, we want to get second place to clinch promotion.

"We're greatly looking forward to the challenges of this and of playing in the cup competitions."
