The classic story of Oliver Twist has received a hip-hop makeover.

Fagin’s Twist, a new high energy show from Tony Adigun, an exciting young choreographer who has worked with Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Usher, is set to bring the stage alive over the next few months.

Charles Dickens wrote Oliver Twist as a commentary on child poverty and social injustice. Tony Adigun adds a twist to this to create a poignant, coming-of-age dance drama which draws parallels between Victorian London and modern society.

Fagin’s Twist, presents its new take on the famous novel by telling an evocative story of Fagin’s youth set to appeal to dance, theatre and music fans of all ages.

It is the untold story of a notorious and complex villain. It imagines Fagin’s youth, driven by greed and ambition in the face of overwhelming poverty. The streets are a place of little comfort and fairy-tale endings are hard to find in this poignant coming-of-age tale.

Fagin’s Twist features five of the familiar characters – Oliver, Fagin, Bill Sykes, Nancy, and the Artful Dodger – but re-imagines the paths of their lives and their individual circumstances.

Some offer us rare glimpses of human pathos, whilst others are seen in a darker, more mysterious light.

Tony said: “I have always been excited by the idea of re-telling a popular tale. I wanted to add a mischievous twist that would play with, and challenge audiences’ perspectives of a much loved classic.

“With brilliant, skillful hip hop dancing and live music there’s a great night’s entertainment ahead and plenty to talk about afterwards as we show some of the best known characters from classic literature in a fascinating new light.”

Fagin’s Twist is onstage at Glasgow Tramway, May 27 and 28, Aberdeen Lemon Tree, October 20-22, with more dates to be announced.
