Like father, like son as Matt Jnr goes on tour

Before his death in 1985, Matt Monro Jnr, promised his father that he would keep his music alive.

Honouring his word, the legend of Matt Monro lives on with this latest tour. Matt first performed the music of his late father at the age of 13.

He said: “It was in 1977 when I first sang a song of my father’s at a show in Great Yarmouth. He pulled me up on stage to sing a duet with him. I had no idea it was going to happen. I swore after that time that I would sing with my father again, but sadly he passed away before I got the chance.”

Despite being no stranger to the stage, it’s this 30th anniversary tour that has made Matt the most nervous.

“I’ve played in front of 10,000 people before, but with this tour, the nerves have really kicked it. I want to give the fans a really good show and also honour my dad’s name. So far it has been really well received by fans, which is fantastic,” he continued.

As well as the music, the show incorporates home videos of Matt Monro Snr.

“I wanted to show who my dad really was,” Matt said. “Including the home movies is the best way to do that. I also sing the song Dance With My Father which always makes me emotional.”

And Matt is looking forward to bringing the tour to Scotland.

“This is my sixth time here and I absolutely love it. Most crowds go crazy and scream for more at the end, but in Scotland, they want more from the minute that you walk out on the stage!” Matt laughed. “It’s a party atmosphere which you don’t get anywhere else.”

The Matt Monro Story plays at Whitehall Theatre, Dundee (Nov 11), Music Hall, Aberdeen (Nov 12), Rothes Halls, Glenrothes (Nov 13), Town Hall, Falkirk (Nov 14) and City Halls, Glasgow (Nov 15).
