A trail into the past

CELEBRATIONS of southside history begin in Pollokshields this week with the launch of the area’s very own heritage trails.

Pollokshields Heritage has put together a series of trails following funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Glasgow city council, and will officially launch the walking guide leaflets on Sunday (March 3), at Pollokshields Burgh Hall.

Trail one covers the west of the suburb and the villas of Pollokshields, followed by trail two on the east and the area’s tenements.

The third leaflet details the history of Pollokshields, including the Maxwells, and the architects and craftsmen who built the buildings commissioned by the landowner family.

The launch event includes a guided tour, which leaves from the Burgh Hall at 2pm, followed by afternoon tea from 3-4.30pm.

Places are limited, and anyone wishing to participate should email [email protected].

The leaflets will also be available from Pollokshields library, the Mitchell and Glasgow City Heritage Trust offices.
