'A wee swally': Japanese Ambassador to the UK Hiroshi Suzuki enjoys match night at Celtic Park
Japanese Ambassador to the United Kingdom Hiroshi Suzuki, who has become a star on social media for his enthusiastic visits across the country, attended the Celtic match against Livingston.
The Japanese Ambassador may have been making his first visit to Glasgow but he looked familiar with local customs as he had a pint of Tennent’s lager in the Celtic boardroom. Posting a picture to his popular social media account, he wrote “a wee swally” in the caption. Hiroshi Suzuki has made an impact since his appointment as Japan’s Ambassador to the Court of St James’s. His fun videos from his travels around the UK focuses on strengthening UK-Japan relations.
He recently received global attention by celebrating Burns Nights with a video of him singing Auld Lang Syne with his wife. He regularly travels with a Paddington Bear toy, which also joined him on his visit to Parkhead.
Suzuki posted pictures from the Directors Box at Celtic Park, where he held a Celtic flag and expressed support for Japanese football stars Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda, who were both in action for Celtic as they won 2-1 last night against Livingston to maintain their momentum in the three-way title race.

Hiroshi Suzuki is a career diplomat who has recently gained widespread fame online for his "viral diplomacy" - using social media to wholeheartedly embrace culture across the UK and post videos connected with regional traditions. He took up his current post in September 2024.
The Japanese Ambassador was in the crowd for Martin O’Neill’s 200th league game in the Celtic dugout. O’Neill was delighted with his new signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain grabbing the late winner and says at the age of 32 only getting started: “Hopefully he's just beginning. It was a class goal from a player who has been class throughout his career.
“It was a late again for us, but in all honesty we should have been 3 up or 4 up in the first 15 minutes of the game. We get one and it's never enough, it's never enough and we allow them back into the game with a penalty kick, and then we're driving and driving and driving, it looked as if, it might not happen, then Alex comes up with a wonder goal. A wonder goal from a very special player.”
