Be ready for winter — and the GP’s Christmas holidays

The campaign focuses on checking repeat prescriptions and restocking either necessary medication or over-the-counter remedies ahead of Christmas, as GP surgeries will be closed on Wedneday and Thursday (December 25-26).

Dr John McAnaw, head of pharmacy at NHS 24, said: “At this time of year, people will be focused on getting organised to make sure they can make the most of the holiday period.

“It’s important not to forget about putting winter health necessities on your to do list.

“It only takes a few minutes to collect some over-the-counter remedies for winter ailments.

“If you take regular medications, please ensure you check you have enough left to cover the holiday period. It’s also important not to over order, so only request what you need, and make sure you don’t run out of anything during that time.”

Repeat prescriptions must be re-ordered today (Thursday) to ensure you have them before Christmas.

NHS officials also recommend stocking up on cold and flu medicines - for all ages if there are children in the house.

Meanwhile, East Renfrewshire’s social work and health convener has issued a call for residents to look in on their neighbours during the winter months.

Councillor Alan Lafferty said: “In East Ren and up and down the country, our social work services are busy delivering essential services.

“In the run up to the Christmas and new year holidays, they will continue to provide support and care for our most vulnerable people.

“But it’s up to each and every one of us to do our bit and help where we can. If there’s a neighbour or friend who needs some shopping brought in because they can’t get out, or their path cleared to help get out, please lend a hand.”
