SEPA has now tackled Cumbernauld's biggest landlord over paint in drains row

Back in March we reported that a a driver was seen pouring large quantities of chemical-laden paint down a drain – in a part of Carbrain that borders the habitat for wildlife.

Appalled eyewitness Jamie Appleby reported the matter to Sanctuary who did not seem to have any interest in the case – and he contacted the Cumbernauld News to express his dismay at the potential damage and the lack of engagement with his complaint.

An irate Mr Appleby also contacted SEPA – and it now emerges that they have spoken to Sanctuary about the matter.

A spokesperson for SEPA said: "We have contacted a company in the local area and reminded them of the importance of disposing of waste appropriately.

“While there were no reports of any pollution in nearby watercourses from this event, it is an important reminder that paint – and chemicals - should not be disposed of into drains. Some will drain into local rivers and burns, and such activity can also cause an issue if it enters the public sewage system.

A spokesperson for Sanctuary Scotland said: “We understand the importance of disposing of waste appropriately and have co-operated fully with SEPA. We have ensured all our staff have been reminded of their responsibilities to ensure this type of incident is not repeated.”
