'Iconic and legendary': Our readers react ahead of closure of Greaves Sports shop in Glasgow

Our readers have described their memories of iconic sports shop Greaves on Gordon Street.

Our readers have been reacting to the news that iconic sports shop Greaves is set to close.

The closure has come as a shock to many customers who have fond memories of buying from the shop over the years.

Kevin Francis McDermott remembers buying his first skateboard from the Greaves, and the personal customer service he received.

He said: “Oh noooo. Bought my first skateboard from there. Took it back as it wouldn't turn. Cheap plastic. Mr Greaves took an interest. Got down on his hunkers and we passed the board back and forth along the shop floor to try and figure out this new fangled gadgetry.”

But a constant throughline in commentary around the impending closure, is a dismay that the iconic store will not continue to operate.

Sandy Jackson said: “Many a happy Saturday gazing lovingly at the golf clubs and enjoying a blether with George the golf expert. Very sad that such an iconic and legendary sports shop is closing, so surely it would make sense to keep it going.”

And Stephen McNaughtan Gardiner added: “What is the point of buying it to close it? Different if there were multiple branches and this was a streamlining operation.”

The business is yet to publicly announce the closure, but signs for a closing down sale have appeared in windows in recent days. It comes months after Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group bought the brand in July 2026.

Greaves Sports has a history dating back to the 1930s when it operated as Clydesdale Rubber Company selling Wellington boots and sheepskin coats. The business eventually changed direction under the stewardship of brothers Jim and Bill Greaves, transforming into the iconic sporting goods store Greaves Sports in 1967.

The shop can namecheck a host of celebrity visitors over the years, including Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra who visited to buy a set of golf clubs in the 1950s. In more recent times, Samuel L. Jackson and Eminem have been counted as customers.

The store has operated from its flagship store on Gordon Street for a number of years.
