The wi-fi, which is available in Main Street, Douglas Street, Stewart Street and Mugdock Road, provides businesses, residents and visitors with free, unlimited internet access.

The scheme was set up by Milngavie BID (Business Improvement District).

It was due to be available at the end of 2014, but there was a delay while BT installed the necessary infrastructure.

The wi-fi has been combined with a special app called ‘Our Buzz Milngavie’ that offers benefits to members of the public who use it and BID levy payers.

Currently it is only available for use on Apple devices, but it will be available on android devices in the next few weeks.

The development offers significant benefits to business owners in Milngavie, who are all required to pay a levy towards the BID.

The app enables them to manage their own promotions to loyal shoppers and other prospective customers, as well as provide a platform to advertise and promote specific events and offers.

It will also advertise the West Highland Way and other outdoor pursuits and attractions that Milngavie has to offer.

BID co-ordinator Ania Surma said: “The wi-fi aims to encourage visitors to the village to stay longer and to surf the internet and engage with the local businesses and the goods and services they offer while they are here.

“It’s a great communication tool and it’s not just for local businesses, it’s for the whole community.

“We think it will be a very useful app for everyone who lives, works or visits Milngavie.

“We hope to extend it to the car parks in the area as well, we just need to identify buildings where we can fit additional antennae.

“It’s very easy to use however a few groups have asked for help with getting to grips with it and we are organising workshops to help people.

“If anyone would like to take part in a workshop please contact us.”
