Ange goes after 'pretentious' EPL factor as Tottenham boss makes Celtic comparison many couldn't cope with

Ange Postecoglou isn’t worried about ‘scrutiny’ he faces at Tottenham.

Former Celtic head coach Ange Postecoglou has spoken on the ‘arrogance’ and ‘pretentiousness’ of the Premier League in a recent candid interview and how he has experienced it during his time with Tottenham Hotspur.

He also touched upon the level of ‘scrutiny’ he has faced in charge of Spurs, saying that it is no worse than anywhere else. He used Celtic as an example, stating that he was expected to ‘win every game’ during his time in charge of the Hoops. Instead, he said that the two jobs are merely ‘different’ challenges.

Postecoglou took on the Spurs job when he left Celtic in 2023 after two years in the Celtic Park hotseat. Previously, the 59 year old has managed the likes of Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory and the Australian national team. As a player, he spent the bulk of his years with South Melbourne.

What did Ange Postecoglou say in the interview?

When asked if the Spurs job was the hardest he had undertaken, Postecoglou replied [via Optus Sport on YouTube]: “No, and I’ll tell you why. There’s a little bit of pretentiousness and arrogance about people in the Premier League that they’re in a ‘special space’. But it’s still football.

“Whether it’s thousands of South Melbourne supporters or hundreds of thousands around the world, it’s still the same to me. The scrutiny isn’t the challenge for me.

“Yes, the competition is more challenging, for sure. We’re competing against the best teams in the world, the demands of that are pretty dramatic. The club has its own unique challenges.

“When I was at Celtic, people would say ‘you’re expected to win every game’. But that’s the thing, you’re expected to win - if you lose one game at Celtic, not many [people] can cope with that. It’s just a different challenge.”
