EFL club fend off 'a lot of competition' to sign Celtic Scottish Cup hero
Wycombe Wanderers move to sign Northern Ireland international from League One rivals Plymouth Argyle.
We are less than a week into the month of June but clubs across the country have already been busy making moves in the summer transfer window.
Celtic’s focus right now is on getting a new permanent head coach in to take charge at the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup winners. Once that has been finalised there will be hope from supporters that the first team squad can be significantly strengthened ahead of the 2027/27 season.
Meanwhile, there have been some former Hoops’ starts who have been tipped with making moves over the course of the window. That includes a one time Cup hero for the boys in green who this week completed a moved between two clubs in the same division.
Scottish Cup winning former Celtic keeper signs for Wycombe Wanderers
Former Celtic goalkeeper Conor Hazard has signed for English Football League club Wycombe Wanderers. It comes after the 6’6 stopper departer their League One rivals Plymouth Argyle who he had been with since 2023 and made over 100 first team appearances for.
Although the Northern Ireland international only played a handful of times for the Hoops between 2017 and 2023, spending most of that spell on loan at clubs like Dundee and HJK Helsinki, he did have one crowning moment at the club. The former Cliftonville man started the 2020 Scottish Cup final against Hearts which went all the way to penalties with Hazard saving two in the shoot-out to secure the trophy for his side.
EFL rivals fend off “a lot of competition” to sign Plymouth Argyle man
Speaking on the signing of their new keeper, Wycombe Wanderers Director of Football Strategy and Data Intelligence Tom Stockwell said: “We’re happy to welcome Conor Hazard to the club as our first summer signing. There was a lot of competition for Conor's signature and we are delighted he has chosen Wycombe as the club for him to make his next step.
“With Conor's experience of League One and Championship football, as well as international football with Northern Ireland, we are confident he will come in ready to hit the ground running. Conor was amongst the best shot stoppers in the division last season, and his commanding 6'6 frame allows him to dominate his area.
“The research and references taken on Conor also highlighted his high level of communication and organisation, as well as holding high standards and a desire to continue to push and develop. This makes him an excellent fit with the club and the club's ambitions. I’m sure the fans will welcome Conor and look forward to seeing him in a Wycombe shirt soon."
Hazard won’t be the only former Celtic player lining up for Wanderers next season. He will link up with one time Hoops teammate Ewan Henderson who moved to Adams Park last year after leaving Belgian side Beerschot.
Wycombe Wanderers finished 11th out of 24 teams in England’s League One last season. They won 17 and lost 17 of their league matches while drawing 12 and will be hoping to improve on that form next season and push towards the play-offs or even automatic promotion with the help of Hazard.
