Chris Sutton says Celtic have sacked their 'Dr Dolittle' as sweeping exits bring about rapid transfer demand
Celtic have parted company with Wilfried Nancy after suffering his sixth loss in just eight matches
Chris Sutton reckons Celtic will have to up the ante on the recruitment front after deciding to part company with “Dr. Dolittle” Paul Tisdale and manager Wilfried Nancy - five days into the January transfer window.
The Hoops icon has spoken out following the club’s decision to sack head coach Nancy after just 33 days in charge, during which the Frenchman won just two of his eight matches.
Nancy’s final game in the dugout was Saturday’s 3-1 Old Firm defeat at home to Rangers, with club officials declaring it was the “final straw”
For Sutton, the departure of Head of Football Operations Tisdale is particularly significant. He believes his old club will now have to act swiftly in the transfer market to ensure they retain the Scottish Premiership title this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the news broke, the pundit was in agreement with the club’s decision to axe the Frenchman and reckons parting ways with recruitment chief Tisdale proves just how deep-rooted Celtic’s problems are.
“Yeah, absolutely,” Sutton responded. “I mean, he's a self-proclaimed doctor, Dr. Doolittle I think he was at Celtic. Nobody knew what he was actually doing at the club. By all accounts, it was a case of him who had a large say in bringing Wilfred Nancy in.
“If he was in charge of recruitment over the summer, that was particularly poor. So, I think it's the right decision for him to part ways, but it certainly puts Celtic under pressure now in having to move quick in terms of recruitment, because there's absolutely no doubt that this squad needs strengthening in January and strengthening quickly.
“And then of course, what happens next? Will it be a return for Martin O'Neill? Will Shaun Maloney be part of that team? I suspect he will be, but it's all about Celtic just concentrating on winning the Scottish Premiership now.
“Of course, it looks like it's going to be a three horse race in that respect. But I think that the decision today was the right decision. Maybe myself, like a lot of Celtic fans, just thought it would happen after the game against Rangers. It didn't, but they've been decisive enough to club out.”
