Door opens for Celtic transfer target as club chief admits they're 'open' to selling international star

Transfer speculation has re-emerged as midfielder returns from the World Cup

Danish Superliga side Brondby are ‘open’ to selling Celtic transfer target Benjamin Tahirovic - as confirmed by their Sporting Director Julius Ohnesorge.

Any transfer negotiations were put on hold for the 23-year old while he was on World Cup duty with Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, now they’ve been knocked out, Tahirovic will return to Denmark and Brondby will have to consider his next steps. Bosnia were defeated 2-0 by co-hosts USA at the round of 32 stage on July 2.

Tahirovic featured in all four games for his country at the World Cup after a successful debut season with the 11 time Danish champions. Both Celtic and European giants Borussia Dortmund have expressed an interest in the defensive midfielder.

Brondby chief on Tahirovic next steps

Speaking to TV2, Ohnesorge named Celtic as a potential next club for Tahirovic as they now consider his future. He said: "He's just finished the World Cup and isn't here right now, so we'll look at the situation with him and his agent when he gets back. He can spend the summer talking to his family about what the next step will bring. Whether it's competing here in a strong squad or whether it's at another club.

"Yes, we are open (to selling) but it's about having the right solution ready. With Max Ejdum we have gained some security and stability in the number 8 position, but regardless, there must be a clear interest from the player in a transfer as well as a clear interest from another club for an amount that is beneficial to us. I haven't heard from either Celtic or Dortmund and I don't follow that kind of thing to be honest. But it's always good to hear that there is interest in our players."

Where would Tahirovic fit in at Celtic?

Celtic’s interest in Tahirovic dates back to the beginning of the summer transfer window, however, they’re yet to table an official bid. The sought after enforcer has experience at playing at the highest level in Europe, having previously enjoyed spells at Roma and Ajax.

While playing for Ajax, Tahirovic told the Sarajevo Times that he prefers a more defensive role in the middle of the park. He said: “I like playing as a six the most. I think that position best suits my qualities as a player. I’m good when it comes to the technical aspect, I have a good passing range and I like having possession.”
