Everything you need to know about Celtic’s Europa League opener

Celtic kick off their Europa League campaign at home to Ferencvaros this week in matchday one of the competition’s league phase.

The Hoops are looking to bounce straight back from their first domestic loss of the season on Sunday at Ibrox as they were beaten 3-0 by Rangers in the League Cup quarter final. Manager Martin O’Neill now prepares his side for European action before they take on their rivals again at home in the Premiership. After that, the first international break of the season will take place.

Celtic were forced to settle for Europa League football this season following their Champions League capitulation to LASK Linz. Last season they were able scrape through the league phase but were dealt a tough draw against VFB Stuttgart in the knockout stage play-offs. Having spent upwards of £30m in the summer transfer window, the aim this season will be to reach the latter stages of the competition. The match against Ferencvaros has been chosen for television broadcast - here’s how Hoops fans can tune in, along with some other useful match information:

What is the Celtic team news ahead of Ferencvaros?

There were no fresh injury concerns from the match at Ibrox but the nature of the defeat will give O’Neill some decisions to make, while he’ll also inevitably have one eye on Sunday. Wolves loanee goalkeeper Sam Johnstone didn’t cover himself in glory at Ibrox and in turn Viljami Sinisalo could regain his place between the sticks.

Forward Camilo Duran was quieter than normal on the right hand side after being moved their to accommodate fellow new striker Kasper Hogh. This left no room for Egyptian winger Haissem Hassan, who could easily now be thrust in from the start on Thursday.

Defenders Alistair Johnston and Landon Emenalo, along with attackers Jota and Callum Osmand remain out injured - while winger Yang Hyun-jun is still competing at the Asian Games for South Korea.
