Saturday’s remarkable 8-4 West of Scotland League success came courtesy of goals by Gordon Dick, James Martin (2), Kieran Brannan (penalty), Ross Barclay, Scott Henderson, PJ O’Donnell and Hugh ‘Shug’ Kerr .

“It’s a great start for us to win,” ex-Gartcairn gaffer Jamie told the Carluke and Lanark Gazette.

“That was the main aim. It was a very, very difficult first game for us to get. For example, when I was Gartcairn manager, I didn’t win one game against Perthshire. They’re a tough nut to crack, especially there, but the players were brilliant.

“They stood up to the physical challenge that they brought, then they imposed themselves on the game.

“That’s what I asked them to do before it, to go and play, be brave, get the ball and create chances.

“I thought my two wide players and my two strikers were different class, so hopefully that’s a sign of things to come.

“Hopefully, we can strengthen in the coming weeks and be even better with a strong squad.”

Lanark, fourth in the table with six points from four games, benefited from a strong opening on Saturday.

“We started really well,” Jamie said. “We were 2-0 up but then we lost a crazy goal from our point of view.

“That was disappointing but then we managed to score again for 3-1, then it was 3-2 and 4-2 by half-time.

“They got it back to 4-3 and we ran out of legs a wee bit.

“We had quite a strong bench. We threw on Shuggy Kerr after injury, young Scott Henderson, who I had brought from Cambuslang, along with Connor McCardle, who I had at Forth.

“Those three came on and really gave us legs. I think we scored four goals in 11 minutes, so that was good.

“Middle to front was really, really good, but defensively as a team, you need to do better.

“You can’t concede four goals. It’s not every week we’re going to score eight goals.

“The only good thing is that the individual mistakes we made this week didn’t cost us, so we just need to go on the training park as much as we can and try and cut out these stupid mistakes.”
