Motherwell star signs new contract as epic start to the season rewarded with long-term stay
Motherwell have wheeled out a lengthy contract for the stopper.
Aston Oxborough has signed a new Motherwell contract until the summer of 2027 - and his stay could be extended beyond that.
The goalkeeper joined the Fir Park club in 2022 after a spell at Norwich City, with loans to Barnet and Wealdstone building his senior experience. He played just two senior games in his first two campaigns with Liam Kelly ahead of him in the pecking order, but the former club captain left in the summer for Rangers.
That presented Oxborough a chance between the sticks and he has been a star performer for Stuart Kettlewell’s side so far, with a Premier Sports Cup semi-final place booked and a fourth place Premiership spot currently occupied. Oxborough stepped up with more big saves in last weekend’s Premiership win at Hibs.
Now he has penned fresh terms with Motherwell to extend his stay to the end of the 2026/27, with the option for a further year on top of that to 2028. Speaking on the deal, manager Kettlewell said: “It’s great to get Aston signed on a longer contract.
“There’s been no doubt in my mind that I wanted him to stay at Fir Park beyond this season. His qualities have shone through in his performances this season. And I think everyone knows how patient he has had to be for his opportunity. He is a huge part of the success we’ve had so far.”
Oxborough added: “It’s been a bit of a whirlwind this season but I’m so happy to be signing on. I’ve tried to give my absolute all and I’m pleased with how it’s went so far. Signing this deal doesn’t mean I’ll be taking my foot off the gas. We have huge games coming up and long-term, I want to be the number one keeper. So, it’s time to keep my head down and get back to work.”
