Ex Rangers and Celtic pair to rival each other for boss job at English club as one would 'jump at the chance'
The former Rangers and Celtic pair are two who have support for the Burnley manager job.
A former Rangers and Celtic pair are set to go head to head for a manager’s job at one English club.
Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League after promotion from the Championship last season. That has piled pressure on head coach Scott Parker and already talk of possible replacements for him have taken flight, should Turf Moor chiefs pull the trigger on his tenure, after being unable to keep them at England’s top table.
Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is on their agenda, according to transfer journalist Alan Nixon. His time after winning the Premiership at Ibrox has not been plain-sailing with Aston Villa and Al Ettifaq but would reportedly be keen on the Burnley chance. Ex Celtic forward Craig Bellamy was previously a Clarets coach and is also one who holds support but his allegiances to his current role as Wales national team boss could put a dent in any advances.
Could Steven Gerrard become the next manager of Burnley?
That coming to fruition could be news to Celtic too as the forward who had a loan stint in Glasgow as a player has been one of the names regularly linked with becoming Martin O’Neill’s successor at Parkhead this summer. Nixon’s Patreon reads: “Steven Gerrard is firmly on Burnley’s radar as Scott Parker closes in on the exit door.
“The former Liverpool skipper has the mind of charisma owner Alan Pace is looking for in a boss to bring the club back from the Championship. The respected figure lives in the north west and would jump at the chance of a challenge like Burnley.
“Pace previously appointed Vincent Kompany and Parker who were both strong and solid managerial types. Gerrard would need a strong coaching team to copy their success and ideally people who know the level. However he is the type Pace likes as a figurehead and he will have a strong chance of the post. Craig Bellamy also has support but is committed to Wales and that may put him off a return to Turf Moor.”
Scott Parker on future at Burnley
Speaking after relegation was confirmed midweek with a defeat to Manchester City, Parker said: "The biggest challenge is the mental side, certainly for us, with five games left, the season the way it has gone. For many of these players the main focus is psychological. Trying to get them to the best place to try to perform.
"You certainly need to have an eye on that, for sure (planning for next season). As a club, all of us need to have an eye on that. At this moment in time games come thick and fast but no doubt in the near future I am sure those chats will take place in more detail.
"This season has been a huge challenge for us. At this present moment in time this season has five games left to play and that's my main focus. Discussions about what we need to do as a football club will take place in due course."
