‘Can't perform’ - Jose Mourinho shares scathing reaction to former Rangers manager axe decision
The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has issued a firm defence of Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and his managerial career in Turkey
Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has slammed the Besiktas board after they decided to part ways with Rangers icon and former manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
The Dutch football coach, who famously led Rangers to Scottish Cup glory and a Europa League final during the 2021/22 season, lasted just 20 games and six months in the Turkish capital.
His reign in Istanbul began with a thumping 5-0 victory over champions Galatasaray to win the Turkish Super Cup but ended on sour terms as he left the Black Eagles fifth in the Turkish Super Liga table and 13 points adrift of the league leaders.
Mourinho, who manages city-rivals Fenerbahce, says he was in complete disbelief when heard the news of van Bronckhorst’s sacking and slammed the board for asking too much too soon of the 49-year-old coach.
In a heated rant, the Portuguese coach told local reporters: "Don't do to me what was done to Giovanni van Bronckhorst. A coach can't perform miracles in two, three or four months. Van Bronckhorst did well, a club needs stability. So give me some time, let me work in peace. Although I always enjoy it, even when there is no peace."
Mourinho’s Fenerbahce side are currently second in the table and on a mission to reclaim the league title for the first time since 2013/14.
His side sit 15th in the Europa League table and are one of the club’s alongside Rangers that are in contention to progress to the knockout stages of the competition after a solid first half performance in the league phase.
Meanwhile, Van Bronckhorst once again finds himself searching for a new job after a long-break from management after leaving Rangers. He reflects fondly on his time in Turkey as he looks ahead to his next challenge.
In a post on Instagram, the 106-time Dutch international said: “Although, I am sad and disappointed to leave so soon after becoming Manager of Besiktas, I feel it is important to acknowledge the many positives that I experienced working in Turkey, even in a short time.
"Like previous roles, I approached this job with passion, a desire to succeed as the potential of the club really excited me. The Turkish people and particularly, the fans of Besiktas welcomed me and made me feel like “one of their own.”
“Turkey is a country with a rich culture and the passion for football is evident for all to see. For that, I will always be grateful.
“The feeling after winning the Turkish Super Cup is right up there with some of my most cherished football achievements. The huge crowd, the passion from the fans and the burning desire from my players was fantastic. To regain this trophy for Besiktas, for the first time in almost two decades was very satisfying.
“I must acknowledge the hard work of my players and staff. If I had been granted more time, I feel that I could have developed and strengthened a squad with huge potential. Please keep working, you are a fantastic group.”
