Rangers eye raid on Ibrox flop boss as talks over move for £7m attacker begin

The transfer target is currently managed by a familiar face

Rangers are reportedly ‘looking’ to secure a deal for £7m Leicester City winger Stephy Mavididi in the near future.

The 28-year old is currently being mentored by ex Light Blues boss Russell Martin - statistically the worst manager in the club’s history. The Foxes are preparing for life without Mavididi in EFL League One following back-to-back relegations. The former Arsenal and Juventus attacker has one more year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium.

Rangers boss Derek McInnes identified wingers as a problem position for his new club, which they are prioritising in the transfer market along with central defenders and midfielders. Given Mavididi’s experience, not just in the Premier League but also across two other top five leagues, his experience and attacking output makes him an attractive asset for the Light Blues.

Rangers ‘looking’ into Mavididi deal

According to prominent sports journalist Mark Hendry on his Substack: “Rangers are looking to do a deal for Leicester City winger Stephy Mavididi. The Ibrox outfit have held talks with the Foxes as they look to secure the 28-year-old to help with their assault on the Scottish Premiership this season.”

Rangers have also looked into re-signing former loanee Vaclav Cerny during the window, however are now being priced out of a transfer for the Besiktas winger. The club currently have wingers Djeidi Gassama, Oliver Antman, Ross McCausland and Findlay Curtis already in the building.

Why are Rangers interested in Mavididi?

Mavididi was a standout for Leicester City in their 2023/24 EFL Championship winning campaign, when he notched 18 league goal contributions in 46 appearances. However, his form has dipped in recent years in line with the decline of the club. As well as Arsenal and Juventus, the Englishman has also enjoyed a spell at Ligue 1 side Montpellier before moving to Leicester.

He likes to play off the left and cut inside on his right foot, however he also has the ability to beat defenders down the line with his pace. Having started his career as a striker, he also has the capability to play higher up the pitch, but Rangers are fairly well stacked in terms of number nines currently.

Since last season’s loanee Mikey Moore returned to Tottenham, the club are in need of a quality addition on the wing as a reinforcement. Dortmund and Rangers have expressed interest in the 18-year old however the Lilywhites have intimated that he’s not for sale.
