Rangers agreed to sign the player but the deal never happened.

He’s ripping it up on the biggest stage - and his success will continue to prove a what could have been Rangers tale.

Malik Tillman is one of the key stars for PSV in Holland and is rated at €25m by Transfermarkt, with six goals and four assists during his first permanent season. He spent last term on loan in the Eredivisie and has now shone in the Champions League.

Tillman scored and assisted twice on Tuesday during a scintillating 4-0 dismantling of La Liga outfit Girona. It’s their first win of the league phase and puts them on five points. The American international was once of Rangers, joining the club on loan in 2022 from Bayern Munich.

It was a fruitful spell at Ibrox in 2022-23 campaign, with 12 goals netted through 43 appearances. Rangers had a purchase option agreed within their original deal but never got to trigger it, as Bayern compensated the Light Blues for ripping up the loan deal and sending him to PSV where they could make more money on a possible permanent deal.

His continued success serves as a what if story, with a star now worth edging towards €30m in value slipping through Rangers grasps even after agreeing a deal to land him. Speaking to Sport Nieuws, Tillman said of the win: "If you show the right mentality, you can play attractive football.

“With our quality and that is something we did today. This was not something new. We were sharp, just clinical in front of goal. We created many chances. We defended the 0 with our lives."
