Transfer interest in Rangers star 'ramps up' as Champions League side make Ibrox star their 'top target'
The latest Rangers transfer news with Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven said to be readying a move for the Glasgow club’s former Everton striker.
The summer transfer window may have only officially opened earlier this week but there have already been a number of important deals made across the country.
Rangers saw their recruitment business put on the back burner with managerial changes at Ibrox as Derek McInnes replaced Danny Rohl in the dugout. The former Hearts gaffer will be reunited with his Tynecastle skipper Lawrence Shankland who was the Gers’ first new signing of the window.
Supporters will be hoping to see more new faces arrive in Glasgow over the next few weeks but there may also be some current first team players departing. One Rangers player has reportedly been made a ‘top target’ by a Champions League side with interest in the forward said to be ‘ramping up’.
PSV Eindhoven make former Everton striker their ‘top target’ as Rangers prepare for bid
Per a report from the Daily Record, referencing an article by Dutch publication ED, PSV Eindhoven have ‘settled’ on Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti as their ‘top transfer target’ this summer. They claim that interest in the former Everton forward has ‘ramped up’ and that the Eredivisie champions have been told by Rangers they will have to ‘fork out at least a double-digit number of millions’.
The Ibrox club are understood to have rejected a £13 million bid for the 22-year-old from Turkish giants Fenerbahce in January just six months after his £8 million move to Glasgow from Merseyside. Their resolve is set to be tested again with a fee of £25 million expected to be enough to convince the Gers’ to let the Portugal youth international leave.
Porto and Galatasaray are also credited with an interest in the forward who scored 15 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions. Besiktas have also reportedly pitched Chermiti as a potential transfer target.
Rangers could cash in on Youssef Chermiti just one season on from £8 million arrival
Although his form was inconsistent at times the striker established himself as a ‘big game player’ as he twice scored braces against Celtic in Old Firm Derby clashes and a hat-trick against title rivals Hearts. That has been enough to ignite significant transfer interest in his services.
The £8 million that Rangers spent to bring him to Ibrox from Everton was very much viewed as an investment. The plan has always seemingly been to sell the sell the ex Sporting CP man for a significant profit.
The Toffees paid £11.5 million for his services from Sporting in 2023. They sold him to Rangers last summer for an initial fee of £8 million that could potentially rise to £10 million with add ons.
Chermiti has represented Portugal at all levels of youth international football from under 15 up to under 21. He has been capped seven times at under 21 level. He is eligible to represent multiple countries at senior level including Tunisia where his father was born.
He won the Scottish Premiership Player of the Month aware in March this year. That was the same month he put Rangers 2-0 up against Celtic in the Old Firm Derby at Ibrox before their rivals pulled two second half goals back to secure the draw.
