Maia – part of the British Bulldogs squad – won three of her five matches as her team ultimately prevailed 63-56 overall thanks to Joe Salisbury and Harriet Dart winning the final mixed doubles encounter 6-4 6-2 against Jamie Murray and Heather Watson in Sunday’s winner-takes-all decider.

With the sides tied at 45-45 going into Sunday, the Bulldogs won six of the 10 matches on the final day in an innovative format where matches were worth different points.

Sunday’s exciting finale concluded an event which had featured the country’s leading men and women playing together in singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches in the unique team event.

“It was a great week,” Maia (22) told the Kirkintilloch Herald.

“It was such a unique tournament, a big mixed team thing that never really happens.

“With all the top players there as well it was a really good experience having them on the benches supporting you and supporting them as well.

“It was really cool to be around everyone.

“It was quite strange at times because obviously Andy and Jamie Murray were on the other team so they were supporting my opponents!

“I got to speak to the Murray boys a little bit but they were on a different team. Our captains were Leon Smith and Anne Keothavong who are the Davis and Fed Cup captains so it was great to be sat on court with them as well.

“All the top players were there and everyone was encouraging each other.

“There were daily money bonuses for the players for every match you won.

“But we were more playing for pride I think. Everyone wanted to beat their friends!

“We were all winding each other up during the matches so it was a really good team environment which isn’t always the case in normal tennis.
