Cumbernauld members of British Legion celebrate anniversary in style

Members of the Cumbernauld legion, families, friends and invited guests came together in period costume at their South Muirhead Road headquarters last Friday for a party to celebrate 90 years of hard work, unity and care for ex-servicemen and women in the community.

Club Secretary Jim Keyes said: “Friday was a cracking night. It was a great night for people to come together and we had a huge span of ages there as well. Some people were as old as 90 and others as young as 18.

“I really want to thank everyone who helped put up the decorations and the bunting. It created a nice atmosphere. The buffet was also excellent and the group that played for us were great too.

“The hall looked amazing and I offer a big wide thank you to everyone who came and everybody who helped.”

MP Gregg McClymont attended the dinner dance as a guest speaker and talked of the importance of the legion and its work throughout Cumbernauld and Scotland.

He said: “I was delighted to have been invited to speak at the celebration. For the past 90 years, The Royal British Legion Scotland has been Scotland’s primary charity providing help and welfare to the serving and ex-service community and families.

“The hard work of the RBLS has been especially noteworthy in the recent campaign to have the Military Covenant enshrined in law. I hope members such as those I have had the good fortune to meet are rewarded for this hard work, and that the Prime Minister keeps his promise to make the duty of care owed to the Armed Forces a legal obligation.”
