DJ nights set to return to legendary Glasgow nightclub venue despite police concerns

A Police Scotland Inspector said new dance music events would lead to an increase in footfall in an historically problematic area at a meeting on Friday.

The Arches was shut down after a decision taken by licensing chiefs in 2015 restricted operations following a police complaint over drug misuse at the venue under Central Station.

But lawyer Stephen McGowan said “that venue” (The Arches) “is not my client” and the current operator is not connected to the history.

Referring to action taken by the licensing board in 2015, he said: “The premises before you today is no connection to what led the board to its decision in May 2015.”

Representing applicant It’s All Food Group Ltd, Mr McGowan said the current operators “inhabit a premises with a past.” He stressed: “It is not a resurrection of The Arches.”

The dance music events are to take place at the new venue – called Platform – on December 17, 23, 26, 28 29 and 31 today’s licensing board meeting heard.

Mr McGowan said the venue is an “events space” and “not a night club” and the dance music dates are part of a wider programme.

He told councillors that he is aware the board welcomes events in a regulated environment adding vibrancy to the city and continues to support live music.

In response to a query from Councillor Dan Hutchison asking for more details on the search policy, Mr McGowan said there would be “no admittance” for a person caught with illegal substances.

Mr McGowan said there would be 31 stewards following a question from Councillor Bill Butler.

It is expected there will be two dance events every month but more will take place during the festive season.

The licensing board granted the variation of premises licence despite the representation from Police Scotland. The venue has an alcohol licence until 2am.

It’s All Food Group Ltd submitted the licensing application for the venue at 253 Argyle Street.

The music events are to be brought through a partnership with Watchtower.
