DOGGONE IT!

A CLUB that teaches dog obedience and responsible ownership will be turfed out a community centre – after council bosses deemed that animals were proving to be a health and safety hazard in the venue.

New rules mean that Cumbernauld Dog Training School must quit Westfield Community Centre after North Lanarkshire Council’s Learning and Leisure Services put a hall lets ban on dog clubs.

However, club leader John Thomson believes that this could lead to a rise in out-of-control pets and that the council has failed to grasp the consequences of the ban.

He said: “A great many responsible dog owners will be left with nowhere to teach or train their dogs – we’ve got more than 70 members.

“In the six years we have been renting the hall we have never had a problem. We do everything we can to minimise inconvenience for the janitors and the rest of the people using the hall – like using plastic seats for example. I don’t know whether there is someone in the council who doesn’t like dogs but I just cannot see how this can be justified,’’ he said.
