One wonders whether today that sign would still be heeded as much as it clearly was back in 65. The war memorial will take centre stage this weekend once again, for the town’s wreath-laying service.

50 YEARS AGO

n Kirkton Church Drama Group were performing their three-night production Quiet Weekend at Carluke Welfare Hall.

n Rev Alan AS Reid was unanimously elected to be inducted as the new minister at St John’s Church in Carluke.

n A car and a van were damaged in a collision in Carluke’s Stewart Street at its junction with Burn Road. No-one was injured.

n At a Carluke WRI meeting, speaker Mrs Robertson, a WVS organiser, spoke about the precautions which could be taken in the event of a nuclear explosion.

n There were almost 100 entries for Kirkfieldbank Homing Club’s young bird show of racing pigeons in their clubbhouse at Lanark.

n Carluke Rovers landed a plum home tie against Johnstone Burgh in the Scottish Junior Cup second round. It was anticipated Rovers’ attendance record of 5000 could be broken.

n A wonder goal by Stevenson clinched a 2-0 home win for Forth Wanderers over Kilbirnie in the first round of the Scottish Junior Cup.

100 YEARS AGO

n Owing to the presence of diphtheria in the Burgh it was decided to close Lanark schools for a fortnight.

n Miss Margaret M Lyle was presented with a gold bangle and a dressing case on the occasion of her leaving Nemphlar school.

n There was a large attendance at a political address in Underbank Primary School delivered by the Hon. William Watson, Prospective Unionist Candidate for South Lanarkshire.

n The Gazette had learned from a Canadian newspaper that Alex Davidson, who had left Carluke five years previously, had opened a baker’s business in Hamilton, Ontario and was doing well.

n All wool blankets were advertised as being available to buy from Brownlee’s Drapery Warehouse in Carluke.

n Carluke footballer Dodds was one of two players grappled and kicked by fans who invaded the park at the end of a Scottish League v Irish League match at Belfast. Dodds had played brilliantly in the Scots’ 3-1 win.
