Plan to close Glasgow city centre Post Office as 115 branches to shut

Up to 115 Post Office branches and hundreds of head office jobs are at risk as part of a radical shake-up of the business.

Bosses at the Post Office have revealed that 115 locations have been earmarked for closure, with around 1,000 employees at risk of losing their jobs. Post Office chairman Nigel Railton confirmed the news following rumours of major restructuring within the organisation, in a bid to boost postmaster pay by £250 million over five years.

He said: “The Post Office has a 360-year history of public service and today we want to secure that service for the future by learning from past mistakes and moving forward for the benefit of all postmasters. We can, and will, restore pride in working for a business with a legacy of service, rather than one of scandal.”

The Communication Workers Union said that the company’s proposal as the inquiry into the Horizon IT scandal continues was "immoral" and "tone deaf".

The government-owned Post Office has 11,500 branches across the UK, most of which are franchises, run by sub-postmasters, with 115 Crown Post Offices which are operated directly by Post Office employees. These branches are usually found in city centres.

The Glasgow Crown Post Office is at 136 West Nile Street. The Springburn Way Post Office is also on the list for closure.
