Power firm’s science day goes like a rocket

Over 180 pupils at Oxgang Primary School enjoyed a series of exciting experiments which aimed to inspire children’s interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

The primary school children experienced flashes, bangs and a rocket launch as National Grid and education providers ‘Science Boffins’ guided pupils through the properties of pressure and gas.

The project was part of National Grid’s ongoing engagement with the local community whilst it continues to regenerate the former Kirkintilloch gasworks site for future development.

National Grid land regeneration manager, Katherine Scargill, said: “We always like to connect with local communities to build relationships in the areas we work and we were delighted to collaborate with Oxgang Primary School to create this exciting day.’’

The pupils were also given an important safety message about National Grid sites.

Head teacher at Oxgang Primary School, Susan Yeoman said: “The assembly and interactive workshops created a memorable learning experience for the pupils and I’m sure it will inspire the children’s passion for science!

“The school is also looking forward to designing a safety banner for National Grid’s site in Kirkintilloch.”
