Celtic defender receives first international call-up amid ongoing transfer speculation

Multiple EFL clubs including Portsmouth and Derby County have been linked with a summer move for the Hoops’ player.

The domestic season across European football came to an end with Sunday’s Champions League final at Wembley as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund to lift the famous old trophy for an incredible 15th time.

With that out of the way all the attention now turns fully to international football as Scotland get ready for this summer’s European Championship finals in Germany. Before that there will be some international friendlies and one current Celtic player is now in line to earn his first senior cap.

Bosun Lawal, who trained with the Republic of Ireland men’s senior team this week, has received an official call-up from their under 21s squad to replace Nottingham Forest’s Andrew Omobamidele who has been ruled out through injury. The Hoops defender, who spent last season on loan at EFL club Fleetwood Town, has so far been capped up to under 21 level.

Republic of Ireland, who did not qualify for this summer’s European Championship finals, face Hungary in Dublin tomorrow and then Portugal on June 11 at the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro. The call up for Lawal comes amid ongoing speculation surrounding the 20-year old’s future.

Reports last month linked the former Watford academy player with several EFL clubs including Derby County, Portsmouth and QPR. Meanwhile, recent reports have suggested that Wigan Athletic could also be keen as former Celtic favourite Shaun Maloney keeps an eye on the situation.

Lawal has made just five senior appearances for Celtic, none of which have come in the Scottish Premiership. He did however earn plaudits for his performances at Fleetwood last season even though the Lancashire club were relegated from England’s third tier.
