Celtic will face an uphill task to qualify from their UEFA Champions League group after starting the group stage campaign with consecutive defeats against Feyenoord and Lazio to leave them rooted to bottom spot approaching the midway point.

Following a last-gasp 2-1 loss at home to last season’s Serie A runners-up - Pedro netting a dramatic stoppage time winner - earlier this month, Brendan Rodgers will know his side need to register some points on the board from their upcoming double-header against La Liga giants Atletico Madrid to salvage their hopes of advancing from the section.

The Hoops were in control for much of the game against the Italians on Matchday Two but weren’t able to find that killer second goal, with Honduran winger Luis Palma being denied his first Champions League goal by VAR.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico side are currently on a six-match winning run, which began with a 3-1 victory over rivals Real Madrid back in September. Star man Antoine Griezmann has been in impressive scoring form, netting a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Celta Vigo at the weekend.

The Parkhead club must somehow find a way to replicate their strong domestic form in European competition, with Matt O’Riley stressing the importance of being ruthless in both boxes following Sunday’s 4-1 thrashing over Hearts at Tynecastle.
