'A no-brainer' - Ex Celtic keeper hopeful of earning Scotland World Cup spot commits future to Premiership new boys
The Scotland international spent most of his Celtic career as back-up but has quickly established himself as Falkirk’s No.1
Scott Bain admits the opportunity to extend his stay at Falkirk was a “no-brainer” after the former Celtic goalkeeper agreed a new long-term contract with the Premiership new boys.
The experienced 34-year-old shot-stopper - who penned an initial one-year deal last summer - has started every league game for John McGlynn’s side this season. His impressive form between the sticks earned him a recall to the international fold during Scotland’s World Cup qualifying campaign after a six-and-half year absence.
Now hopeful of earning a place in Steve Clarke’s 26-man squad for next summer’s finals, Bain has opted to stay put at Falkirk by signing a two-year extension with the option of an additional 12 months.
Scott Bain: Agreeing new Falkirk deal was a ‘no-brainer’
Commenting on his decision to extend his stay with the Bairns ahead of Saturday’s clash against St Mirren, Bain said: “I am delighted to sign this extension at the club. It was a no-brainer for me and my family, I’m really enjoying life here, and I love working with everyone at the club, the players, and the manager.
“The way I see the game and the way I enjoy playing the game is the same as how the manager wants to play so I love the way we are on the park. I’m just taking it step by step, the same way we do on the pitch, and hopefully we can continue to have success both individually and as a team.”
Falkirk boss McGlynn hailed Bain’s impact since joining the club - and expressed his delighted at managing to nail him down on a longer-term deal, warding off potential suitors in the process.
He admitted: “To say we’re pleased to have signed Scott on a longer-term contract would be an understatement. It’s great news - huge news. He’s been outstanding from the minute he walked into the football club.
“First and foremost, he’s a top goalkeeper, and he’s helped our defence immensely. He’s brought a real calmness to the back line and to the team as a whole, and he’s also an excellent character off the pitch. He’s been very good in the dressing room, bringing a lot of knowledge from his time at Celtic, where he worked at a high level for a number of years.
“He’s learned a great deal, and our players are already benefiting from that, and will continue to do so going forward. Everyone on the staff is absolutely delighted we’ve been able to get Scott tied down on this longer-term deal, and I’d like to thank the board of directors for making sure we could get it over the line. It’s a huge plus for everyone involved.”
