Celtic and Rangers are expected to be busy in the summer transfer market as they battle once again to achieve Premiership glory

The 14 June marks an important day in the calendar of many football fans as Scotland begin their European Championship journey against the host nation Germany in what promises to be an incredible occasion for the Tartan Army.

Likewise, the date is also significant for manager’s around the division as it marks the beginning of the 2024 summer transfer window - and it is expected to be a busy one for Glasgow heavyweights Celtic and Rangers as they are tipped to once again battle it out for the Premiership title.

Celtic are the defending champions under Brendan Rodgers, but face the challenge of finding a new goalkeeper after Joe Hart's retirement while they also face a battle to keep hold of a number of their prized assets such as Matt O’Riley whilst also bolstering areas further up the pitch such as their frontline.

After missing out on the title, Rangers fans are also anticipating a summer of change as Philippe Clement oversees his first summer window at Ibrox after inheriting the post from Michael Beale in mid-October.

Rangers main objective in the summer will be to find a prolific goalscorer to give them the edge over their Old Firm rivals, but finding talent in that area of the pitch is often difficult given the sheer amount of competition in Europe and beyond.

With that in mind we take a look at how long Rangers and Celtic have to get their business done ahead of transfer deadline day.

When does the summer transfer window open?

The summer transfer window in the Scottish Premiership opens on Friday 14 June, the same day as the English Premier League and the EFL.

The window gives the clubs over a month and a half to recruit new signings before the opening day of the Premiership season on Saturday 3 August.

When is transfer deadline day?

The summer transfer window in Scotland and England will officially close on Friday 30 August at 11.30pm UK time.

The Premier League and Scottish Premiership brought forward Deadline Day to ensure harmonisation with the major leagues in Europe. The closing dates were set following discussions with the leagues in England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Can clubs sign players outside the transfer window?

Signing a footballer can often be a long and drawn out process and in some cases negotiations are often agreed before the start of a transfer window.

However, a player will only be officially registered and able to play for their new side when the window is open. This rule does not apply to free agents as these can be signed at any time in the season providing that their contract is terminated with their existing club.
