Josh Windass to Rangers return rumours kiboshed as Wrexham boss seeks to add more quality, 'not lose it'
Attacking midfielder has been linked with a potential return to Ibrox this summer
Josh Windass will NOT be heading back to Rangers for a second spell after Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson moved to shut down rumours of a potential return this summer.
The former Ibrox attacking midfielder was linked with a move back to Govan after an impressive campaign for the EFL Championship side, who narrowly missed out on the play-offs following their promotion from League One last year.
However, it’s understood that Light Blues head coach won’t be reunited with Windass having worked together at Sheffield Wednesday. The experienced 32-year-old is not a name they are actively pursuing.
And Parkinson has ruled out the possibility of allowing his top scorer and Player of the Season to depart this summer, even if there was strong interest from Rangers.
He stated: “There was no contact in January for Josh, not officially. Josh is our player, he had a good season and we are looking forward to him building on that next year. We are looking to add to the quality we have got, not lose it.
”I think we would be disappointed if there wasn’t some interest in our players. It is inevitable but we have got the key players we want on long contracts and we are in a good position on that front.
“We are looking to build on what we did last year and improve the squad to make us really competitive again.”
Windass made 73 appearances for Rangers between 2016 and 2018. He spent two seasons working under German boss Rohl at Hillsborough, during which he scored 50 goals.
Windass ended the Championship season as the Red Dragon’s top marksman after netting 16 times in the second tier of English football. In addition, he contributed a further five assists in 41 league outings this term.
What has Josh Windass said about his future?
Providing an update on his stance over his future at the Racecourse Ground when speaking to talkSPORT earlier this month, Windass hinted that he wouldn’t be going anywhere.
“Yeah, I signed a three-year deal in the summer,” he stated. “I feel like I had a really good year this year and yeah, hopefully next year we can go one better.”
Contracted until 2028, Wrexham will be in a strong position when it comes to any future negotiations. The Hollywood-owned club have lofty ambitions of securing promotion to the Premier League next season and view Windass as a key member of the squad.
